Greenhouse gas emissions in Slovakia decreased by 7.4% in 2024 compared to the previous year, totaling 33,419 gigagrams of carbon dioxide, according to a preliminary report from the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ).
After accounting for carbon absorption by forests and landscapes, net emissions amounted to 27,961 gigagrams of CO₂ equivalent, reflecting only a 1.2% year-on-year decrease. Experts noted this suggests a decline in carbon absorption capacity between 2023 and 2024.
The energy and industrial sectors contributed most significantly to the overall reduction, with notable decreases in aluminum production and other industrial processes. Preliminary data also indicate that the drop in transport emissions observed in 2023 may mark the beginning of a positive long-term trend rather than a one-off anomaly.
The only sector where emissions continue to rise is agriculture, SHMÚ added.
Final emissions data for 2024 will be available in early 2026.
