Slovak researchers have launched the second phase of a nationwide mosquito virus monitoring project, focusing on West Nile and Usutu viruses. The Biomedical Research Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (BMC SAS), in cooperation with regional public health offices, is conducting the study in 36 locations across Slovakia.
Scientists are also monitoring invasive mosquito species and, with the Transport Ministry, have begun tracking tropical viruses like Zika, dengue, and chikungunya at Bratislava Airport. The project runs through October, with early DNA and RNA samples already under analysis.
Lead researcher Viktória Čabanová noted that the collected data may help residents reduce infection risk. Their innovative honey-bait trap method has attracted international interest, and last year’s findings aided in diagnosing human infections and initiating blood donor screening.
