PURA: The Earth Prize 2025-winning water purification solution by Anna Podmanická (19) and Tomáš Čermák (18)

According to the UN, drug-resistant infections already claim 700,000 lives each year — a number projected to rise to 10 million by 2050 if no action is taken. Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest public health threats of our time — driven by overuse, poor regulation, and, perhaps most alarmingly, contaminated water sources.

In this show, listeners will meet two talented young scientists — Anna Podmanická from Slovakia and Tomáš Čermák from Czechia — who, while still in high school, developed PURA, a groundbreaking water purification system that targets antibiotic residues using a powerful mix of photocatalysis and cold plasma.

They share why existing water treatment systems are no longer enough, how PURA could help curb the spread of antibiotic resistance, and why young innovators might hold the key to solving our most urgent global challenges.
