The root vole: When helping one species can help the whole ecosystem

Surely you've heard of voles—small rodents often blamed for damaging crops. The most well-known is probably the Common Vole, notorious for its appetite for agricultural plants. But not all voles are the same. Hidden in the wetlands of the Danubian Lowland lives the Pannonian Root Vole, a far less familiar species. Unlike some of its relatives, this vole doesn't feed on crops. Instead, it plays an important role in the delicate ecosystem of the wetlands.

Together with Andrea Froncová from BROZ Nature Conservation Association, Romana Grajcarová discussed not only the importance of the root vole, but also the vital role wetlands play in the ecosystem.
