Ensuring the protection of storks and improving their living conditions is the aim of the 22nd meeting of European stork communities, which is taking place these days in the village of Buzica, near Košice. As its mayor, Jozef Mohňanský informed, this is the first time such a meeting has been held in Slovakia. He further stated that the number of storks returning to their nests here is decreasing.
Representatives from several countries, including the U.K. and Germany, are taking part in the meeting.
The meeting of European Stork Communities runs from Sunday (25 May) to Wednesday (28 May). It is part of an international initiative supported by the German environmental foundation EuroNatur, which since 1994 has awarded the title of European Stork Community to those communities that are actively involved in the conservation of white stork colonies and their natural habitat. So far, 16 municipalities from different European countries have been awarded this title, and Buzica was the only municipality from the Slovak Republic to receive this award in 2014.
