The first 2025 outbreak of African swine fever in Slovakia has been confirmed at a farm in Dolné Semerovce, in Levice district, affecting over 18,000 pigs. The Ministry of Agriculture says depopulation begins on May 5, and strict restrictions are in place within 3 and 10 kilometre zones. The disease, deadly to pigs but harmless to humans, is highly contagious and incurable. Moving pigs, pork products, or slaughtering animals without approval is banned. Authorities urge residents to report home pig slaughters in advance and await test results before consuming meat. The infection source is under investigation.
