Slovak scientists given award at prestigious international congress in USA

Scientists from the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) have received a prestigious award at an international congress in the USA for their exceptional contribution to developing protocols for in vitro testing of the biocompatibility of medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

"It's a great honour for us that our work has been recognised at such a prestigious international forum. This success motivates us to continue our efforts to integrate in vitro methods into standards such as the ISO [International Organisation for Standardisation]," said institute director and co-author of the study Helena Kandarova.

The main author of the award-winning research is internal PhD student Peter Pobis. "The study introduces new in vitro protocols for assessing ocular irritation and phototoxicity using the EpiOcular 3D reconstructed human tissue model. These results are a significant step towards reducing the need for animal testing and integrating reliable alternative methods into regulatory standards," added SAV.
