An Asian hornet was seen in the Upper Nitra area on Monday, the Environment Ministry posted on a social network on Monday, adding that this is the second record of this invasive species in Slovakia.
The ministry warned that the discovery in the region outside the expected range confirms the extraordinary ability of this species to spread, not only naturally, but also through human activities such as the transport of goods.
"This invasive species, which is gradually colonising Europe, arrived in our territory for the first time last year, after occurrences in neighbouring countries," pointed out the ministry.
The insect poses a threat to pollinators, including bees, which make up 80 percent of its diet. Asian hornets are also a threat to people allergic to stinging insects and fruit growers, as they cause damage to fruit tree crops and vineyards.
