Slovak students create cut-price variometer

Have you ever flown in a glider or been paragliding? Those who do say it’s a liberating experience, soaring high above the ground without an engine, relying on thermals to keep them aloft. But how can you tell if you’ve caught a real rising thermal or just flown into an upwards pocket of air?

One team from the Slovak Technical University have come up with an idea called the Skybean, a pocket-sized variometer which they hope to making not only a commercial success, but the cheapest ever offered. Gavin Shoebridge has more.
