Asylum seekers in Humenné to learn Slovak language and facts

A total of 12 teachers of Slovak, history and geography will undergo training in the education of asylum seekers at the facility in Humenné (Prešov region) as of Tuesday, said Education, Science, Research and Sport Minister Juraj Draxler, TASR informs. In order to make the adaptation process easier, the ministry along with the Centre of Further Education at Comenius University has prepared an education programme in which asylum seekers will learn the Slovak language and various facts. "One interesting thing is that the education will not be carried out at the camp, but at a local secondary school, and in the case of history and geography it will be in the field", said Draxler, noting that teachers will take the asylum seekers to a museum, for example. The ministry stated that this is the first programme of language education for asylum seekers. This currently concerns adults, but subsequently also children will be integrated into schools after their planned transfer to Nitra. According to Centre for Further Education director Janka Chládecká, other training courses concerning the adaptation process are under preparation, including, for example, on legislation and cuisine. "We need to become aware that Slovakia isn't a temporary but a target country for them", said Chládecká. The training for teachers will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the education of the asylum seekers will start on Monday (February 12). It will last three weeks, with six hours of lessons per day.
