Almost 77 percent of Slovak electricity comes from nuclear facilities

Slovakia's dominant power producer Slovenské elektrárne (SE) generated over three quarters of its energy output last year at its nuclear facilities, TASR learnt on Tuesday. According to data published by the company, Mochovce nuclear power plant (Nitra region) generated 7,523 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, while the Jaslovské Bohunice plant (Trnava region) produced 7,623 GWh. "Both power stations have thereby confirmed their long-term significant shares in the guaranteed energy security of the country. Nuclear energy makes up almost 77 percent of electricity generated by SE", specified the company. The remaining portion was chiefly produced from coal (10.57 percent) and hydro power (12.33 percent). The share of biomass in SE's total energy output was 0.24 percent, while photovoltaic generation accounted for 0.01 percent. "The year 2015 was one of large investments in Slovenské elektrárne, thanks to which Slovakia was one of the first countries in Europe to have all nuclear blocks equipped with measures to prevent or deal with accidents involving fuel melting in a reactor", stressed SE. Meanwhile, an investment worth €40 million continued at the Nováky thermal power plant (ENO) over the whole of last year with the aim of 'greening' the plant. Despite operational breaks during the modernisation work, ENO maintained stable results last year. Emission-free sources made up 90 percent of electricity output, mostly due to nuclear and hydro-power stations operated by SE.
