The Guatemalan region of Uaxactun revealed one of its hidden treasures to a Slovak archaeological expedition. Slovak archaeologist Daniel Kendrala has discovered the oldest Mayan inscription found so far, which is expected to rewrite the history of this ancient civilization. Archaeologists estimate that the inscription dates back to the 2nd century BC.
Daniel Kendrala is part of the team of Slovak archaeologists from the Slovak archaeological and historical Institute, which has been exploring the Mayan civilization in Guatemala since 2009. "It's a big coincidence. Initially it looked like an ordinary stone, which we threw on the pile with the rest of the rubble," says archaeologist Peter Valent from the Slovak archaeological and historical Institute. The inscription is still waiting to be translated, and according to the archaeologists it might even be a calendar.
