EU interior ministers will hold an informal meeting in Amsterdam on Monday to discuss the tackling of the refugee crisis, along with measures to save the Schengen zone. Slovakia's interior minister Róbert Kaliňák stated for the public broadcaster RTVS on a discussion show on Sunday, ahead of the meeting in Amsterdam, that border checks don't facilitate the protection of Schengen borders, but we should introduce an effective system of keeping illegal migrants off our territory and returning them to their countries of origin instead. Moreover, Slovakia will support the idea of a joint European Border Watch. Most-Híd vice-chair Lucia Žitňanská, who also appeared on the discussion show, warned that external border protection is only one of many issues that the EU is currently facing. According to her, EU-member states should also guarantee adequate living conditions in camps outside the EU to prevent migrants from coming to the Union.
