German Supreme Court to decide on Slovakia-Achmea dispute soon

Slovakia still has €29.5 million blocked in its accounts in Luxembourg due to a dispute with Achmea, the Dutch co-owner of health insurance company Union. The blocked sum is related to the ban on health insurers retaining profits that was introduced by Robert Fico's first government (2006-10. The issue should be resolved by the German Supreme Federal Court. Slovakia lost a legal dispute with Achmea in December 2012. An international arbitration tribunal obliged Slovakia to pay compensation equalling €22 million to Achmea, plus its legal costs amounting to €3 million. One month later Slovakia appealed to the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt. Following a negative verdict on Slovakia's appeal, the Slovak Government submitted an appeal to the German Supreme Federal Court.
