The number of guns in Slovaks' possession reached its peak over the last six years, according to the daily SME. Police statistics, quoted by the daily, show that the number of registered firearms increased year-on-year by about a third, which translates into 11,200 newly registered guns. The statistics also show that there are altogether around 300,000 registered guns in Slovakia. The real number of firearms owned by Slovaks could be much higher, however. "It's highly probable that there aren't only 300,000 guns in Slovakia, but arguably even around one million," said Ľudovít Miklanek from the Association of firearm owners Legis Telum. The daily associates the increased interest in guns with current issues of security risks such as the migration crisis and terrorism.
