One of the most respected personalities in Slovakia, the catholic priest Anton Srholec died on Thursday January 7th. At the age of 86 he succumbed to a grave illness that he had been battling for the past year. Srholec had been imprisoned to a sentence of 12 years, a large portion of which he spent working in the uranium mines in Jáchymov. He studied theology in secret and was made a priest in 1970, a profession he carried out for 45 years. For more than 2 decades he had been involved in numerous projects dealing with human rights and the youth. For 20 years straight he had been running a shelter house for the homeless in Bratislava called Resoty. He had received many prestigious awards and enjoyed the respect and popularity of a vast part of the Slovak population.
