Leaders of the EU member states agreed on setting up a European Border and Coast Guard, Slovak press agency TASR learnt Thursday evening. The proposal will be discussed also by the European Parliament and the EU Council for internal affairs. The most disputed point of the proposal was the decision on joint intervention at threatened border sections when a member state isn't able or willing to adopt the respective measures. Some countries are afraid of losing their sovereignty over border protection at the national level. According to Prime Minister Robert Fico, the Slovak Cabinet welcomes this proposal despite several sensitive issues. "If a state isn't capable of protecting the Schengen border, others will do so," said Robert Fico, adding that it's essential to stop the influx of illegal migrants.
