According to the Slovak Ministry of Environment, the universal agreement on climate change, which resulted from the UN talks in Paris, will be a turning point in the fight against climate change. The COP21 deal commits countries to try to keep global temperature rising "well below" 2 °C, the level that is likely to prevent the worst effects of climate change. It also commits them to try to limit warming to 1.5 °C. This change should result from a strong reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and a gradual transition to new technologies. Decisions on further steps will be negiotiated during the next climate conference in Marrakesh in December 2016. Slovakia is supposed to lead talks on behalf of the European Union there, since at that time, the country will be chairing the EU.
