Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák met United States Permanent Representative to NATO Douglas Lute on Monday. Lajčák and Lute spoke about the process of NATO's adaptation to a changed security environment on its eastern and southern borders as well as to the new threats stemming thereof. Lajčák praised last week's NATO session in Brussels, where foreign affairs ministers decided to invite Montenegro to become a NATO-member state. They also discussed the future form of NATO-Russian relations, engagement in Afghanistan, and the spreading of terrorist threats such as those stemming from Islamic State. When speaking to Lute, Lajčák emphasised the need to respond to all new challenges in a coordinated way. "We should do everything within our power to send out a clear signal at the next NATO summit in Warsaw that NATO is united and capable of adapting to the new security environment," said Lajčák. The two officials also discussed the problems involved with engaging in hybrid warfare and agreed on the importance of international efforts to stabilise Afghanistan.
