The State Plenipotentiary for Roma Issues Peter Pollák presented, as he called them, the most severe measures of the Roma reform. According to him, the law will rectify the injustice done between those working and those on welfare support. Pollák used the Slovak saying, there is no cake without work, when introducing the first measure.
“People in need of welfare support will receive their benefit only if they do community service work for 8 hours a week. People cannot receive money for free. This system will be fairer and will encourage people to find a job,” Pollák explained. The law he presented should also deal with the current state in which people who are on welfare are not punished for crimes committed. The last of the three measures that Pollák prepared in the law should address the school attendance of children. “If a child misses 15 lessons at school, he or she will not be entitled to the state contribution for school attendance,” concluded the State Plenipotentiary for Roma Issues.
