Climate change affects Slovak potatoes and cabbage

This year's extremely hot summer affected the harvest of cabbage and potatoes with harvest quantities decreasing and prices increasing significantly, according to Pravda daily. "We had been irrigating potatoes nonstop but it didn't help", said Zdenek Cernay, a farmer from Senec. Potatoes are sold for between 65-80 cents per kilogram, while cabbage goes for 60 cents per kilo. The Potato Farmers Union reported that the harvest of potatoes was cut by between 80,000-100,000 tonnes. The harvest of potatoes decreased by between 20-50 percent countrywide. Poor harvests were also recorded in the neighbouring Czech Republic, Poland as well as Germany. The production of potatoes was at a normal level only in France, the Netherlands and Belgium.
