The notion by the European Commission (EC) to extend the list of banned weapons that are currently legally owned by EU citizens will not solve anything, as the occurrence and intensity of terrorist attacks is not dependent on a couple of assault rifles said security analyst Milan Žitný on Wednesday. "In most of the terrorist acts the perpetrators use explosives," claims Žitný, citing the explosions in trains in Madrid in 2004 and in London in 2005. "The EC is mistaking consequences with causes and draws the pseudo-problem of weapons as extraordinarily pressing," said Žitný. "It results in attention being diverted from the really serious issues that the EU authorities are either not capable of addressing or are avoiding because of their complexity," said Žitný. According to him, the extension of the ban list will not prevent bloody terrorist acts in Europe in any way but it could in fact increase the number of those who don't trust the EC's policies and strengthen the numbers of those opposing a united Europe, concludes security analyst Milan Žitný.
