Slovakia will file lawsuit against EU for mandatory migrant quotas

Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed that Slovakia will press charges against the European Union, fighting against the proposed system of mandatory quotas for the redistribution of 120,000 refugees. The charges will be formally laid on December 18, 2015. "The deadline will be met", said Fico, adding that he has information that the action will probably be joined by other EU members, such as Romania and Hungary. According to Fico, it is unacceptable that the interior ministers of other countries can decide on how many people other nations should receive. During the weekend, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák indicated what the legal action will be based on. According to him, one problem is that the mandatory quota provision was pushed through as an emergency measure. However, Kaliňák stated that the migrant situation did not occur suddenly and it had been known about several months in advance. He also pointed out that the refugee crisis emerged as a result of breaching the Schengen rules, i.e. by not guarding the EU's external borders properly and by not combatting illegal migration.
