Some 53,000 primary school first-graders started their student life today, which are 2,000 more than last year. “We're in the stage of mild growth for the moment, or maybe stagnation. This state of affairs will last for a few more years and is to be followed by a long-term period of decrease in the number of school children,” said demographer Boris Vano adding the schools expect the number to decrease by around the year 2020. The new school year should see a change in the primary school curriculum, with more emphasis on mathematics, natural sciences and Slovak language.
