October 30 – the declaration of the Slovak national day

On October 30, 1918, an assembly was held to accept the Declaration of the Slovak Nation. It is considered to be one of the key documents for the establishment of Czechoslovakia. 200 participants of the assembly gathered without being informed about the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic in Prague on October 28. They refused the right of the Hungarian government to act on behalf of the Slovak nation. They announced the Slovak national council to be the only representative to speak and act for the nation. The so called Martin's declaration, adopted in the northern Slovak town of Martin, officially declared a new unity with the Czech nation.
