During the summer season, Košice Airport welcomed 112,872 passengers on charter flights, which is a 6-percent (or 7,048 passengers) decrease year-on-year. Nevertheless it was the second most successful season in the airport's history, airport's management reported on Tuesday. The main causes for this year's decrease were the tragic events in Tunisia in June. As a consequence, most Slovak travel agencies cancelled their trips to this northern African country. Last year, the Tunisian city of Monastir was the third most popular destination from Košice with more than 10,000 passengers, while this year it was a mere 2,000. There were 408 charter flights to and from 13 destinations in nine countries in summer season 2015. "Despite the massive drop in passengers travelling to Tunisia, we can regard this season as a success, as 112,872 passengers within four months is still a nice figure which confirms our potential. We would like to tap into our potential and that's why we work on a year-round regular connection to one of the attractive seaside destinations", said Michal Tmej, CEO and board member of Košice Airport.
