Environment Minister Peter Žiga and state-run Water Management Company general director Marian Šupek opened the Kráľová dam on the Váh River in western Slovakia on Monday. "For several weeks we've been opening anti-flood dams, which we started to reconstruct four years ago. For many years, anti-flood measures have been absent." The Kráľová dam was built 30 years ago in a flat area straddling the districts of Galanta and Šala. Previously, there were extensive malfunctions. The original fortification wasn't sturdy enough and was rather unstable. Reconstruction of Kráľová, the second biggest Slovak dam was among the utmost priorities claims the Minister adding that this investment is one of the biggest carried out recently. It was financed with the help of the EU Cohesion Fund worth €13.4 million. Minister Žiga further noted that he'll keep on pushing through anti-flood measures. There are 550 endangered cities around Slovakia. The ministry will invest €400 million between 2014-2020 to improve the situation.
