Slovakia spends more than is common in Europe on the salaries of officials, the operation of the state, and foreign aid. The portion of these expenses reaches 16.7% in Slovakia whereas the EU median is 13.5%. It is one of few items in which we are ahead of the EU. In most spending, Slovakia is below average in Europe. The reason is simple, according to Martin Baláž, an analyst with Slovenská Sporiteľňa: it is because the Slovak tax burden is lower than the EU median, which increases Slovakia’s competitiveness, especially in the eyes of enterprises.
