The newly constructed D1-motorway bypass around Levoča, north east Slovakia, began charging tolls to lorry drivers as of Thursday even though it hasn't been opened as yet.
An ordinance of the Transport, Construction and Regional Development Ministry has come into force as of October 15, applying charges to the D1 section in question. The National Highway Company (NDS) hasn't managed to open the completed motorway stretch yet, however. According to NDS spokesperson Eva Zgravcakova, this should take place in a few days. The ordinance brings several other changes, mainly related to the completed bypass. For instance, five new sections of first-class road, which now run in parallel to motorways and expressways, have been constructed as well. Conversely, three other sections have been removed from the network of first-class roads. At the same time part of the R1 expressway near Nitra has been transformed from a single charged section into two charged stretches. As of October 15 the number of delimited road sections has been increased from 4,299 to 4,302, with the total length of such sections rising by seven kilometres to 17,700 km.
