The Defence Ministry should see a budget increase by €84 million (10.5 percent) on an annual basis in 2016 to a total of €881 million, according to a state budget draft set to be debated by the Government on Wednesday. The overall defence budget will reach €890 million (1.10 percent of GDP) in 2016, while it has been only 1.03 percent of GDP this year. Nevertheless, a political agreement within NATO stipulates that its member countries should spend 2 percent of GDP each year on defence.
