A total of 45.6 percent of Slovaks lived in rural or thinly-populated areas last year, while 'intermediate areas' of towns and suburbs were home to 35.4 percent of people in Slovakia, according to figures from Eurostat. Densely-populated areas accounted for the rest, or 19 percent. The respective figures for the European Union were 27.8 percent for rural, 32 percent for intermediate, and 40.2 percent for densely populated areas.
