A species of mosquitoes transmitting malaria has emerged in Slovakia, most likely due to the extremely hot weather experienced in recent years, climatologist Jozef Pecho has told TASR. "We've recorded their presence. Nevertheless, no cases of malaria have been confirmed in our territory," said Pecho, adding that mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles have emerged in the neighboring Czech Republic as well. Pecho noted that the high summer temperatures also appear to be attractive for certain species of steppe spiders from the Balkans. At the same time some thermophilous invasive plants may move in to Slovakia, too. It can't be expected that it will be possible to grow bananas and citrus fruits in Slovakia, however, he said.
