Protests against US military presence in Slovakia will continue

Protests aimed against any US military presence in Slovakia will continue in the future, said former Prime Minister Jan Čarnogurský at a press conference in Bratislava on Tuesday. Čarnogurský along with representatives of the Slovak Communist Party (KSS) described themselves as activists of peace, and presented a declaration of civil associations, groupings and political parties against any US military presence in Slovakia. The declaration states that there's a need to stand up against provocative manoeuvres carried out by NATO and the USA on Slovak territory. The contracting parties also agreed that NATO and US military bases and convoys threaten to restrict Slovakia's sovereignty and drag Slovakia into military conflicts. The signatories don't consider Russia to be a threat. Čarnogurský informed the public that there will be yet another protest against NATO and the US military by the end of October. Čarnogurský, a former dissident, said that cooperating with Communists doesn't pose any problem for him. The important thing is to agree on particular matters, he said. "We consider US policies to be the main instigators of war in the Middle East, Ukraine and north Africa", stated Čarnogurský. "We don't want to be pulled into them [armed conflicts] because we don't consider them to be our conflicts", he added. Suleiman called on the Slovak public to protest against the US military. He also thinks that there is an ongoing 'descent into fascism' within Slovak society which also appears in the shape of xenophobic behaviour against refugees and migrant quotas. The contracting parties said that their end goal is Slovakia's departure from NATO structures. However, they don't think that this is realistic in the short term because influential media do not support this idea.
