From September consumers will be able to use the data on their receipts from purchases bigger than one euro in a National Receipt Lottery launched by the Finance Ministry. The scheme aims at reducing VAT fraud by encouraging people to ask for receipts for their purchases and to check their accuracy. Annually Slovakia loses about €150 million in uncollected VAT.
Contestants will have to copy three figures from the receipts, receiving a lottery number in return. The receipt will have to be registered via the Internet, a text message, or at a newsagent’s which accepts Loto tickets. The price of the text message is 12 cents. The lucky winners could get almost €1.5 million. The first winners will be known in early October.
