Slovak university students need an average of €3,600 during the academic year, a survey by 2muse for VUB bank has revealed. Tuition fees and textbooks account only for 10 percent of the sum; with the rest being swallowed up by leisure activities, food, accommodation, shopping (20 percent each), and transport (10 percent).
While being a student of the University of Economics in Bratislava costs €4,400, those attending courses at the Catholic University in Ružomberok (Žilina region) spend less than half of the sum (€2,100). However, according to the survey, two thirds of the students have enough money to cover their studies. Two-thirds of students said that they earn extra money via part-time jobs in the summer while a tad lower proportion claimed to work on a part-time basis even during the academic year. Parents remain the most important source of money for some 83 percent of students.
