President Andrej Kiska perceives the debate about migrants as a struggle for the heart and character of Slovakia. He thanked the people who volunteered to help migrants outside of Slovakia, in Austria and Hungary. He also added that taking several hundred, or even thousands of migrants to Slovakia would not be a threat to our culture nor our way of life. Kiska is discontent with the various arguments against admitting migrants to our territory. "We'll always have our own problems which we need to solve. However this does not mean that we should enclose ourselves and not help others" stated Kiska. The president called out to politicians and citizens to differentiate between fear of the unknown and open hatred and extremism and xenophobia. He added that a way to do this is refrain from slogans claiming that migrants are probably terrorists or economic swindlers.
