New recipes to be introduced in school canteens

The Education, Science, Research and Sport Ministry thinks that children should have more varied and healthier meals in school canteens and has drawn up 68 new recipes to be introduced as of the upcoming school year. Some of the currently used recipes were produced as early as in 1965. According to Education Minister Juraj Draxler, food is a very important part of school life. An average of 66 percent of children at nursery, primary and secondary schools eat in canteens, while this percentage is much lower in secondary schools. As of September new elements will be added to meals such as potato-carrot cream, a beetroot with cherry drink, fish with a herb crust, tofu in breadcrumbs and bulgur with vegetables. Cooking methods will also change - frying will be replaced by baking with minimum amounts of fat. More herbs, nuts and cheese will replace salt and flavourings in kitchens. This year the ministry will also be launching a programme aimed at training experts in cooking school meals. It is expected that approximately 2,500 canteen employees will participate in them.
