In the year 1968 August 21st historians say was a sunny day, just like today ... However the summer atmosphere was destroyed by an unexpected invasion of troops of the so called Warsaw pact – that is of the Soviet Union, Hungary, Poland, Eastern Germany and Bulgaria.
Almost 750 000 soldiers, 800 planes and 6300 tanks occupied the country in an effort to suppress and end the attempts at reforming socialism - called also the Prague spring, that was taking place in the country under the rule of politicians such as the famous Alexander Dubcek.
Traces of the 1968 occupation of Czechoslovakia lasted until the year 1991 – when the last Soviet troops left the country.
