Approximately 300 local municipalities are not proving not to be as successful in their consolidation efforts as expected, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico. In a speech to the board of the Slovak Towns and Villages Association (ZMOS) in Bratislava on Tuesday, Fico appealed to town mayors to increase their efforts to consolidate public finances. “Unfortunately, we can't just turn a blind eye to this. If Slovakia fails to meet its international commitments, it'll be bad news for all,” said Fico, adding that the departure from the target plan is jeopardising Slovakia's commitment to squeeze its budget deficit below 3 percent of GDP.
The prime minister remained optimistic however, suggesting October may bring more positive figures through improved municipality management.
