In the first half of this year Police recorded 6,232 vehicle accidents on Slovak roads, accounting for a decrease of 120 on last year. Of those accidents, 114 people died, representing a decrease of 14 lives, informed Slovak Police Corps Vice President Ľubomír Ábel. "Overall, I can say that from a nationwide point of view this development is favourable. Some regions are doing well, while unfortunately others are average. This is a long-term problem in the Žilina region", said Abel who specifically mentioned Žilina for its comparatively high fatal accident numbers. "From accidents there were ten fatalities this year, which is the worst result among the 53 police districts in Slovakia", he added. The best-case scenario in the number of accident related fatalities is currently the Trnava region, where police recorded eight fatalities. Conversely, the worst region was Žilina, which saw 26 people die in vehicle related accidents in the last 12 months. Abel added, however, that police are still disappointed in the number of injuries involving light road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. "Regarding the accident rate, Slovakia has moved from fifth [worst] to seventh place, which is a positive example with regard to the quality of our roads", said Abel.
