The Slovak Transport, Construction and Regional Development Ministry recommends railway companies to heighten their security alerts due to the threat of a terrorist attack throughout Europe’s railways. This comes as a reaction to the German daily newspaper Bild which reported on early Monday that the terrorist network Al-Qaeda plans attacks against trains in Europe. The warning supposedly came from the US National Security Agency.
Security experts suspect terrorists will target railway tracks, overhead lines, or to plant explosives on trains, in tunnels, or on routes. The Slovak Transport Ministry does not have any information that would indicate any increased security risks on Slovak railways. Despite this, the Ministry recommends all railway companies to increase their vigilance. Slovakrail, the Slovak railway company, has developed a system of security measures and a warning system in case of any emergency, stated their spokesperson, without specifying any details, for security reasons.
