Over-confident young drivers cause more accidents

As of June this year there are more than 180,000 drivers in Slovakia with fewer than two years of experience behind the wheel, with police reporting in the first half of this year alone 552 traffic accidents were caused by this group of drivers. The most common causes of accidents include distracted driving, speeding, and also the use of mobile phones. "As a result, drivers and their delayed reactions often cause serious accidents resulting in death and injury", said Police Presidium Spokesperson Denisa Baloghová. Even within novice drivers, gender stereotypes appear to be true: women tend to be more cautious drivers, while young males are often bolder and more likely to violate speed limits. Another factor in a driver's attitude is music. Transport psychologist Karol Kleinmann stated that, "Upbeat music can cause a more active and dynamic style of driving". In 2014, police recorded 855 traffic accidents caused by motor vehicle drivers aged 18 to 20 years.
