Svatobor, a Slovak civic association which helps disadvantaged Roma, were among the entities selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to be awarded this year's International Literacy Prize. The Slovak civic association helps Slovak Roma "to overcome social exclusion and enjoy their fundamental human rights", while "applying innovative concepts towards environmental sustainability including training in nutrition and employment". All five awardees of the prize will receive $20,000 USD (approximately €18,400), a diploma and a medal at a ceremony at UNESCO's Paris headquarters on September 8, which is International Literacy Day.
