Heat alerts for days ahead
The heatwave seen in the past few days is likely to continue in the days to come, with the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) issuing heat alerts of the first and second category for Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday is forecast to see temperatures rising to 34 degrees Celsius in western and southern Slovakia, namely, in the southern districts of Bratislava, Banská Bystrica, Nitra and Trnava. Meteorologists warn that such high temperatures could pose potential danger to human health as well as increasing risk of fires. Wednesday, for its part, will see thermometers hitting up to 37 degrees Celsius in the southern districts of Bratislava, Banská Bystrica, Nitra and Trnava, for which a second-level warning has been issued. In addition, parts of the Trenčin, Košice, Žilina and Banská Bystrica regions are forecast to see temperatures of between 30-34 degrees Celsius.
