Some foodstuffs are unfairly demonised, says food group

Some foodstuffs are unnecessarily demonised these days, despite the fact they are the safest in history, said Slovak Food Chamber (PKS) director Jarmila Halgašová at a press conference about widely believed food myths on Thursday. According to Halgašová, myths are also circulating about so-called fortified foods. "Fortified food is regular food made in a way which ensures it contains, aside from regular ingredients, those with significant health effects on the human body. They emerged in Japan as early as in 1991. These foodstuffs were developed with the aim of achieving optimum nutrition and having a favourable effect on people's mental and physical state", explained Halgašová. "It isn't right to try to define ideal nutrition based on the amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Never-ending diets and books on losing weight are trying to offer perfect recipes with an exact amount of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. In reality, however, the most important thing for our health is the quality and amount of food we eat along with how often and in what ratio", said Halgasova. The Slovak Food Chamber (PKS) is an interest group of legal entities set up by food companies operating in Slovakia with the aim of advocating the common interests of the food industry at the level of state and non-government institutions. PKS, which has been operating since September 2002, is a voluntary organisation with 47 members.
