As Slovakia offered to provide accommodation for a total of 500 people, who have applied for asylum in Austria, it has to deal with the opposition of locals from the village of Gabčíkovo against the proposal to accommodate the transferred asylum seekers there. Part of the Gabčíkovo inhabitants fears the refugees, as they have demonstrated in a petition against their arrival signed by 3,148 people. According to the Head of the Municipal Office in Gabčíkovo Eva Vargová, the village will also hold a local referendum asking the residents whether they are against setting up a temporary refugee camp for migrants in the facility of the Slovak Technical University in Gabčíkovo. The referendum is to be held on August 2.
