Slovak embassies in Baghdad in Iraq and Damascus in Syria will be closed down by August of this year, reads a ruling of the Government. The reasons behind the move in Iraq are the security situation in the country caused by Islamic State, which has conquered parts of Iraqi territory, plus high financial expenditures caused by altered conditions for the lease of the embassy building. The embassy in Damascus halted its operations in May 2012 due to the on-going war against the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. The embassy workers moved to Beirut in Lebanon, where a Damascus embassy workstation was set up. Now a full embassy for Syria will be opened in Beirut which will also take care of matters concerning Jordan and Iraq.
