Beating the heat: Košice installs drinking fountains and mist sprayers

With a heatwave currently embracing Slovakia, Košice city has today rolled out a series of measures to mitigate the heat, including spraying city streets with water, installing so-called greenery zones, and the installation of more water fountains in the city centre. "We will do everything in our power to help Košice handle this situation", said the mayor of Košice Richard Raši. "We will provide residents with enough water and we're watering streets, parks and other greenery to make it cooler and more pleasant. As a novelty, two devices which spray water for locals to cool themselves down have been placed on the main thoroughfare", added Raši. Depending on the heat in any given day, there will be four water tanker trucks on hand at locations throughout the city. The town has also called on all local businesses with air conditioning to offer their cooler workplaces to the public in extreme conditions, especially for citizens particularly sensitive to heat, such as seniors, children, and the sick.
