Slovakia wants to help migrants, voluntarily, stressed Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák on Wednesday when he spoke about a draft of a voluntary proposal to help migrants that is to be submitted on behalf of Slovakia to the European Commission. The draft is not final yet however according to it for migrants could be carried out at three levels - Slovakia wants to increase the number of people within the so-called humanitarian transfer that it has been providing since 2008. Slovakia also wants to help neighbours Austria, that faces an inundation of migrants. Thirdly, there will be support for the activities of Slovak charities focusing on Syrian Christians. Kaliňák explained that while Slovakia has provided humanitarian transfers for 300 refugees a year, this year the number could rise to 500. Slovakia was one of the EU countries that opposed introducing mandatory quotas for refugees. Premier Fico explained that the state wants to help refugees who don't pose a security threat but that Slovakia won't accept economic migrants. Fico reiterated that on a voluntary bases Slovakia could also participate in setting up safe zones in Libya where troops would be deployed.
