Parliament greenlights anti-segregation measures in Schools

Special educational needs due to disabilities will no longer be legally comparable to special educational for children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, as Parliament approved an amendment on Tuesday to the Education Act that also contains measures against the segregation of pupils at schools. According to the Education, Science, Research and Sports Ministry, the drafting of the amendment was driven by the fact that the development of a child in a socially-disadvantaged environment does not automatically lead to a learning handicap, which is a key factor for assigning the pupil to either a special school or special class. "This measure unequivocally prevents segregation", emphasised education ministry spokeswoman Beata Dupalova Ksenzsighova.
